Should funeral flowers be white?

Absolutely not. Funeral flowers can be any colour you want.

You can have just white flowers, you can have pinks, yellows and oranges! You can opt for just greenery and foliages. You can have a mix of everything.

Traditional funerals

White flowers, particularly lilies, were common in Britain. This is probably because white flowers symbolised purity, innocence and new beginnings. Some people also consider white flowers to reflect respect and reverence.

It’s now become just the done thing. Navigating organising and attending a funeral is already challenging, so most people won’t want to challenge the status quo.

Embracing colour

We’re definitely seeing a move away from all white funerals though. Funeral flowers bring comfort on the day. Opting for a more colourful palette can help bring a ray of sunshine on a difficult day.

We find the most meaningful funeral flowers are those that reflect the life and personality of the deceased. If they were a vibrant, happy person then a coffin spray full of sunflowers or poppies or daffodils would be much more appropriate than white lilies.

Should we use colour or not?

There’s absolutely no right or wrong. The two key things to focus on are: What will best honour the deceased? And what will bring comfort to the family? It’s a very personal choice, but whichever choice you make will be the right one.
