Top 10 most popular funeral flowers

In 2019 the Co-op created a media report called Burying Traditions: The Changing Face of UK Funerals.

Their research shows that these are the top ten most popular flowers in Britain. Are there any flowers on this list that surprise you?

  1. Rose

The rose took the top spot! Different coloured roses have different meanings and symbolism, but for more people all roses reflect love and fondness.

They’re such a beautiful flower and make for a really impactful floral tribute.

2. Lily

White lilies have been a very common flower choice for funerals in Britain. Years ago this would have sat at the top spot, but they’re still really popular. Lilies are a really impactful flower and have a gorgeous scent. If you want to include lilies in your floral tribute then you can choose from whites, pinks, yellows and reds.

3. Carnation

Carnations are such a good all round flower. They come in a huge array of colours so you can always find one to match your colour palette. They also last ages, so if you wanted to take home some flowers from the floral tribute these would be a great flower to include.

4. Sunflower

This sunflower is such a bold and cheery flower. If you’re wanting to bring some comfort and joy on a difficult day then this is a great choice. These are a great flower to celebrate someone’s life.

5. Daffodil

These are also such a joyous flower. Including these in your floral tributes would bring some colour to the funeral service.

Daffodils can usually be easily sourced from British and/or Scottish growers during spring. This would make them a great flower choice if you want to include locally grown flowers in your floral tribute.

You could also include daffodils that are still growing on the bulb so they can then be planted somewhere special after the funeral.

6. Orchid

The orchid is a really beautiful and opulent flower that comes in lots of different colours. They bring a touch of luxury to a funeral tribute. Orchids are a great choice if you’re wanting to move away from more traditional funeral flowers like lilies and roses.

7. Tulip

Similar to the daffodils, tulips can easily be sourced from British and/or Scottish growers during spring. This would make them a great flower choice if you want to include locally grown flowers in your funeral tribute.

8. Poppy

Poppies come in lots of varied and fun colours. Using these in a funeral tribute would create such an interesting piece. These make a great alternative flower if you’re wanting to move away from the feel of a traditional funeral.

9. Peony

A really beautiful flower that has definitely become very popular during the last decade. This would be great to create a very pretty, feminine floral tribute. Peonies often come in whites and pinks.

10. Daisy

A really sweet, dainty flower. Daisies would be great to include in a tribute that felt quite natural and inspired by a garden. Lots of people associate daisies with childhood and making daisy chains, so these can be a really meaningful flower.
